The LORD Fulfilled His Promise

1 Kings 8:20 (ESV) -- Now the LORD has fulfilled his promise that he made. For I have risen in the place of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and I have built the house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.

As a father who has buried a child that I long to see again one day, the promises of God are precious to me. I bank my life on them. They help me redirect my thoughts when I’m drifting toward despair or doubt. My faith is bolstered by remembering what God has said He will do. His promises give me a sure foundation from which to live my life.

Our passage today shows how vital it is that we remember that God always fulfills His promises. We read in 1 Kings 8:20, “Now the LORD has fulfilled his promise that he made. For I have risen in the place of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and I have built the house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.”

Solomon is praying in this passage. He says that the LORD fulfilled the promise He made. What was that promise? It was a promise to David that he would not lack a son on the throne. Now Solomon finds himself in that position. He is the king over Israel. He sits on the throne in power just as his father did.

Not only is Solomon the king, but he has built the Temple, a house for the name of the LORD to be worshipped. David desired to do this, but God told him no. This job would fall to his son. Again, God keeps His word and Solomon oversees the construction of the Temple. In this prayer, where Solomon is giving thanks and dedicating the Temple, the focus is on the fact that the LORD keeps His promises.

This reminder is good for us. God keeps His promises because He possesses all power and authority. Nothing can thwart His will. If He gives a promise, it will be fulfilled. God can’t lie. His Word will come to pass in due time.
