The Hand of the LORD

1 Samuel 7:13 (ESV) -- So the Philistines were subdued and did not again enter the territory of Israel. And the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

The Israelites battled against the Philistines for many generations. The Philistines were strong and formidable. Most are familiar with the most famous of Israel and Philistine encounters when David fights and kills Goliath. But in most of the early encounters it was the Philistines that were stronger.

But we read in our passage today about how God’s actions amidst the Philistines played a role in subduing them. In fact, it demonstrates that it was more than a “role” in subduing them, it was the reason they were subdued. We read in 1 Samuel 7:13, “So the Philistines were subdued and did not again enter the territory of Israel. And the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.”

The Philistines were subdued. That’s what Scripture records for us. The specific way mentioned in this passage is they were unable to enter the territory of Israel again. This is a massive issue. Both today, and in the ancient world, protecting your own land is vital for national security. If your borders are not secure, enemy armies can attack at will. But God subdued the Philistines from such an action.

Then we read that the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. Consider the gravity of that statement. God’s hand was against the Philistines. God doesn’t literally have a hand. It refers to His will and actions. This means He set His purposes against them. It didn’t matter how strong their armies were or wise their generals were. God’s hand was against them. This means any and all efforts on their end to come against Israel were futile.

An important take-away for us in this passage is the reminder of God’s active governing of the world.

God can raise people up and cast them down. He can protect weaker nations and individuals despite the power and wisdom of those against them. Ask the LORD to subdue your enemies. Pray for His protecting right arm to be on your side.
