The Fight

1 Timothy 6:12 (ESV) – Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Many people today dislike the imagery and metaphors of faith as a war or battle. They don’t like military or combat language to describe the Christian life. However, the Bible uses this language. The apostle Paul referenced our daily life against evil spiritual forces as warfare. Spiritual warfare is the battle against the dominion of darkness.

Our passage today is another example. Paul is writing to his disciple, Timothy. He’s instructing him in the way of leadership and godliness. He tells him, “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”

The life of the Christian walk is referred to as a fight. It is a battle. Why is that the reference given? Because there are enemies that we face each day. We are confronted with our flesh, sin, the world, and Satan. Each of these want to take us away from obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ. They want to destroy us. Paul exhorts Timothy not to be a passive observer in this fight. He tells him to take hold of eternal life. Fight.

We are in a fight every day. Our world makes it incredibly difficult to live for Christ. God’s Word is ridiculed and denied at every turn.

Many are led astray because of the active warfare of the enemy around them. But we can’t sit passively by as Christians or the Church and watch. We must fight. This is not a passive endeavor that we are on as we strive toward the City of God.
