The Breath of His Mouth

Psalm 33:6 (ESV) – By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.

I’m not the greatest handyman. I can assemble things purchased at the store with specific instructions and parts that come with it. But even then, I’m not great at it. It’s work. I’m slow. During COVID lockdowns I helped a friend build a table for our dining room. It is a large, long table. The process for building the table took a few weeks and many trips to the store to get supplies we lacked. It was work. What amazes me is that God’s creative work in the world was easier for Him than any creative work I’ve ever endeavored.

Our passage today shows us this amazing fact. We read from the psalmist in Psalm 33:6, “By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.” The “word of the LORD” is speaking about God’s voice. His command. Through His word the heavens were made. The breath of His mouth brought forth the starry host.

It is a staggering reality to consider. The universe is impossible in scope to fully explore. We have telescopes that capture images from unfathomable distances away, yet we barely scratch the surface in our explorations. There are countless galaxies that we’ve yet to see or understand. The creation is vast and great. How hard was it for God to create this spectacular display? It wasn’t at all. He simply spoke the words. He breathed out the command, “Let there be light.”

The reality of this today should leave us in awe of God. It should provide comfort to our hearts and minds. Our lives feel overwhelmed by the number of things we are involved in and are trying to juggle, yet the God of the universe, whose word brought it into being, is with us. He is not overwhelmed. His power displayed in creation is a reminder for us that His power is capable of speaking into our lives. Bring your needs to Him today. Refuse to become overwhelmed by the greatness of your circumstances. Instead, let your heart be overwhelmed by the greatness of your God. A right view of God can solve 10,000 problems in our lives. Look to Him today.
