Can You Find Out?

Job 11:7 (ESV) – Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty?

I’m not a math guy. It has been years since I’ve had a math class of any kind. But when I was young and in school, math was not my subject. I often wonder now that I’m older and wiser if I’d catch on to math better than I did when I was young and uninterested. Either way, I know that even if I did better, I’m not wired for advanced math. There are types of math that are deep and complicated. Even really great mathematicians reach the ceiling of their capacities, while others still have new layers of depth they can explore.

This is true about math. But what our passage teaches us today is that there are deep things about God. Theology is similar to math in that way. There is a cursory level of theology that anyone can pick up on. But then there are layers of depth that even the most studied scholar can get swallowed by. We read in our passage today, “Can you find out the deep things of God? Can you find out the limit of the Almighty?”

Studying about the character and nature of God is an exercise of awe. The deeper you explore, the more you realize your own limitations. Consider this fact. God can hear the prayers of millions of individuals all at the same time and know the exact context of each one of them, plus respond with sympathy based on what the situation is (i.e. joy, grief, patience, etc.). How do you explain that? How can you wrap your head around that? Yet this is a simple illustration of the depths of God. The layers go much deeper.

Our passage is helping us recognize not only our own limitations, but God’s limitless depths. He is unsearchable. Nobody can find the depths or limits. We often peer into the mysteries of God to glean any insights we can. It is not difficult to leave with insights, but we often leave with more questions and exhausted brains. His greatness goes beyond our comprehension.

Be thankful that you cannot exhaust the knowledge or depths of God.
It won’t be possible in Heaven either. We will only continue our quest to know Him more and worship Him in spirit and truth as we grow in that knowledge.

Reflection & Journal:
- Why are we incapable of reaching the depths of the Almighty?
- What does it say about God that He is not able to be explored exhaustively?
- How should this stir our hearts' affections for God?
