By His Will They Existed

Revelation 4:11 (ESV) -- “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”

One day around the throne we will sing praises to Jesus. We will see Him face-to-face and pour out our gratitude filled praises to the One who saved us and kept us until the Day of our salvation.

We see such a scene unfold in Revelation 4:11. John records, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” The beginning chorus of praise shouts “Worthy are you, our Lord and God.” To declare the worthiness of someone is to emphasize their greatness. Jesus is exalted here as the worthy One. He is the Lord, and He is God. He’s worthy of all the praises the saints ascribe to Him.

Worthy to receive glory and honor and power. These mark the attribute of His character and nature. He is the most glorious of all beings. The honor due Him surpasses any person. The power that belongs to Him is unlimited in nature. All glory, honor, and power mark the person of Jesus. For that, He alone is worthy.

Why is He worthy to receive these attributes? Because He created all things. He is Author and Maker of all things. Nothing exists except by Him. By His will everything, including ourselves, existed and was created. This grounds the worship and praise of Jesus in the realities of His role as our Creator. By His will we exist. Reflect on that today. It is only by the will and purpose of Christ that you exist. You are alive today because Jesus sustains you by His will. Not only that, but the very fact that we came into existence is because He determined that we would. This implies that our lives have purpose and meaning. We’re not accidents. Everything is by His purpose. Walk confidently today knowing that you are no accident or product of chance. Jesus has you here for a purpose.

Reflection & Journal:
- What does the worship of Jesus in Heaven tell us about His nature?
- Why does this passage teach that we should declare Jesus’ worthiness?
- How should we live in light of the truths declared in this text?
