Before The Mountains

Psalm 90:2 (ESV) -- Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

There are attributes of God Christians tend to focus on more than others. It may be because we enjoy particular attributes because they speak to our lives. It could be because some are more difficult to understand. We love the attributes of God’s grace, love, faithfulness, and others because they highlight God’s character in saving us. But we neglect doctrines like the aseity, simplicity, and eternity of God because they are more difficult to grasp.

Our passage today teaches us about one of those more difficult attributes of God. The psalmist writes, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” This Scripture highlights the eternity of God.

The psalmist writes that “before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world…” He is speaking of creation. Before the creation of the world and everything in it. There was a time before anything material in the universe existed. The psalmist says that before creation, “from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” God was always there. Before the creation existed, God existed.

God is from everlasting to everlasting. This means God’s existence reaches back into infinity. There was never a time when God ceased to exist. He never came into being. He is from everlasting to everlasting. Reflecting on this truth is mind-blowing. Who made God? Nobody. God is self-existent. He’s just always been. I don’t even know how to process that reality. This means the truest thing about reality is the existence of God. He predates everything. He is the ultimate reality.

Reflection & Journal:
- Why is the eternity of God an important doctrine?
- What does it mean that God is from everlasting to everlasting?
- How does this doctrine encourage us as Christians?
