All He Did Succeeded

Genesis 39:2-3 (ESV) -- The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands.

God can open doors that no man can close. And God can close doors that no man can open.

These words are axioms about God’s power and provision that are absolutely true. They remind us that while our work and labors matter, we cannot do anything unless the Lord provides. We labor in vain if the Lord doesn’t bless our labors.

Our passage today reminds us of the Lord’s favor. We read in Genesis 39:2-3, “The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master. His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands.” The key phrase is: the Lord was with Joseph. Everything else that follows is because of this truth. Because the Lord was with Joseph we see he becomes successful. All that he did succeeded in his hands.

Joseph undoubtedly had a sharp acumen, wit, and skills that accompanied his labors. But these things were gifts from the Lord. However, none of these gifts would materialize successfully for him if the Lord was not blessing his labors and work.

More than anything in our lives, we should ask the Lord to be with us in this way. We don’t simply mean His presence with us, that is a given that we should cling to and celebrate daily. No, what I mean is “with us” in a way that prospers our work. That gives our labors success and vitality. We want our work to do well. We want to get the deal, close on the property, see the opportunities, and be successful. Nothing can replace God’s blessing on us in these endeavors. If we have it, nothing can stop us. If we don’t, nothing will succeed. Ask the Lord for His favor over your family, your work, your school, your ministry, and other endeavors you are a part of. He delights to bless His children.

Reflection & Journal:
- Why do we often struggle with thinking God will bless our endeavors?
- How did Joseph’s labors prosper? What does the text say?
- What things in your life today should you lay before the Lord and seek His blessing over?
