There is a God in Heaven

Daniel 2:27-28 (ESV) -- Daniel answered the king and said, “No wise men, enchanters, magicians, or astrologers can show to the king the mystery that the king has asked, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream and the visions of your head as you lay in bed are these…

Sometimes it feels like those who are in positions of power in our world are beyond the claims of God and the gospel. We know in our minds they are not, but it often feels like they are in positions of prominence and “above” those things. But they are not. Scripture is chalked full of examples of powerful rulers being brought face-to-face with the reality of God’s power and reign.

Our passage today shows Daniel confronting the king of Babylon with the truth of YHWH. Daniel 2:27-28 says, “Daniel answered the king and said, ‘No wise men, enchanters, magicians, or astrologers can show to the king the mystery that the king has asked, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream and the visions of your head as you lay in bed are these…’”

Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that nobody could answer or reveal to him. Daniel tells him that there is a God in heaven who can and does reveal mysteries. Notice He is not the God of the Jews or Israelites alone. He is God. He is the True and Living God over all flesh. In fact, it is God who has given King Nebuchadnezzar these visions and dreams of what will happen. This is a great reminder that God not only gives Daniel the ability to understand the dream, but God gave the dream.

The LORD is over all people in all places. Nobody is exempt from His rule and reign, including the most powerful people in the world. They are all but flesh. They will perish like everyone else and stand before their Maker. Daniel isn’t afraid to tell Nebuchadnezzar who is actually ruler over all. Nebuchadnezzar is only a man. He is a created being accountable to God. The same is true for kings, Presidents, congressmen, famous actors, athletes, and musicians.

Never let the exalted position of people in the world confuse you about who they belong to and are accountable to. They may not acknowledge the superiority of God, but make no mistake, He’s over all. There is a God in Heaven.

Reflection & Journal:
- Why is it important that powerful leaders know that they are under the rule of God?
- What does Daniel reveal to Nebuchadnezzar about his dream?
- How does this passage teach us about the extent of God’s reign in the world?
