The Great Maestro

Genesis 45:7 (ESV) — And God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors.

Do you believe God does what He says He will do? God keeps His promises. The struggle for the Christian is not whether we confess that truth, but whether we live each day in light of that truth. The promises of God are what give us peace in the midst of chaos. They offer us security in uncertain times. They tell us what we can expect when everything seems out of control. God’s promises are life and peace.

Our passage today demonstrates the faith of Joseph in believing God’s promises. In Genesis 45, as he stands before his stunned brothers who years earlier sold him into slavery, he says to them, “And God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors.”

Joseph understands his brothers are guilty of what they did to him, but he sees something bigger happening. He understands that God’s hand has brought him to this position of power and influence. But why? To preserve a remnant of His covenant people on the earth. He’s going to spare them from famine through Joseph’s position. Have you wondered why He chose to do that? Why is that a commitment of God’s to do that? Because He made a promise to Abraham to build him into a great nation that will bless every other nation (Genesis 12). If the people of Israel had died of famine and starvation, then God’s promise would not have been kept. And that is unthinkable for God. He must keep His Word.

What promises of God do you need to believe right now? The Lord keeps His Word without fail. We discover those promises in the Word of God. Read the Scriptures. Cling to His Word and the promises made in them. Do not let your earthly circumstances lead you away from heavenly realities (Colossians 3:1). God is on the throne, and His promises are always kept.

Reflection & Journal:
- Why does Joseph believe all these actions he has experienced are from God’s doing?
- How are the promises of God tied to what takes place with Joseph and his rise to prominence?
- Are there any promises of God today that you need to imitate Joseph in believing?
