The Father's House

John 14:2 — In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

“Daddy, you said you would get us ice-cream.” I’ve heard that statement from my daughters so many times. You could change the statement to many other things, and it would be true too. “Daddy, you said you’d get in the pool with us.” “Daddy, you said we could go get Mexican food.” “Daddy, you said after this podcast you’d play music.” I can’t even recall how many times I’ve made my girls promises that they clung to and reminded me of. They hold me to my word. They take what I say and base their expectations on it.

Our passage today is a reminder of this reality for Christians. There are many things God tells us in His Word that we should not quickly forget. Jesus tells His disciples in John 14 that in His Father’s house are many rooms. Where is He talking about? Heaven. Jesus’ Father, God the Father, dwells in Heaven. And in the Father’s house are many rooms. What are those rooms and who are they for? They are for the children of God. Jesus says that if this fact were not so, He would not have told us it was. But He did tell us and goes to prepare a place for us.

Jesus has prepared a place for His people. Each child of God has a place in Heaven waiting for them. This is a real place. If it were not so, Jesus would have told us so. Like my children do with me, so we should cling to these promises from our Father in Heaven.

Do you have loved ones there now? If you know people who have died that belonged to Christ, you can rest assured that they dwell there now. They are in the Father’s house where the Father dwells. And if we belong to Christ, we too will one day reunite with them there. If it were not so, Jesus would have told us.

Reflection & Journal:

- Why is Heaven called the “Father’s house” in this passage? What does this tell us about Heaven?

- How do the words of Jesus about the certainty of this truth encourage your heart?

- How should believers live their lives in light of this future reality?
