Psalm 8:1 (ESV) -- O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.

We tend to view the world in categories. People either love and follow the LORD or they don’t. We often see this from the very narrow lenses of individuals who proclaim the name of Jesus or don’t. But in reality, at all times and in all places, the LORD is hallowed and praised in all the earth. 

Our passage today reminds us of this reality. Psalm 8:1 says, “O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.” The psalmist declares that it is YHWW, the One True God, whose majestic name radiates over all the earth. His glory is above the heavens. 

What does this mean? It means that from the macro perspective, the LORD’s name is majestic in all the earth, no matter where you go. This doesn’t mean every person or nation heralds it or obeys Him as they should. But it does mean that in all the earth, there is no greater or more majestic name than the LORD. People’s recognition of it or surrender to it doesn’t make it so or make it less true. 

This is like saying 2+2 = 4. It doesn’t matter if people recognize it as such, or even know math. The reality is the reality everywhere you go. So it is with God’s great name. His glory is above the earth, even when the earth scoffs at the name. 

What this means for us as Christians is: 1. We should live like the name of the LORD is majestic in all the earth. 2. We ought to proclaim the greatness of that name so more people can see and savor the reality. 3. We need to remember in the chaos that unfolds each day on the earth that God’s great name, and His glory, are above it all. His majestic name is such because He alone is the rightful king of the universe. Praise His name!
