As You Received Christ

Colossians 2:6-7 (ESV) — Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

Aerosmith had a famous song called “Walk This Way.” I’m not sure what most of the song is about but that chorus just repeats over and over again. In the Bible, a person’s “walk” is a reference to their lives. How they live their lives is their “walk.”

I remember in my twenties a popular question church goers asked one another was “How is your walk with the Lord going?” It was a way of gauging your spiritual health.

Our passage today talks about our walk. Paul writes in Colossians 2:6-7, “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” Notice that the exhortation is to walk in Christ in the same way you received him. How does any believer receive Christ? By faith! It is by faith that we trust Jesus’ death for our salvation. By faith we enter into the Kingdom of God. Faith alone in Christ alone is how our sins are forgiven and we are adopted into the family of God.

Paul says that just as we received Christ—-by faith—so walk in him. We are to walk by faith. Our lives are to be marked by our faith. Faith should drive how we approach and operate in a marriage. Faith is the driver of how we handle finances, function in our career, and approach parenting. Christians are marked by our faith in Christ and trust in the Bible. We are to walk by faith in Christ in this world.

Notice the passage goes on to further show how the walk of faith continues. We are “rooted and built up in him and established in the faith.” We grow in maturity, wisdom, and knowledge as we walk by faith. We are not easily swayed or knocked over by trials, false teaching, or earthly pursuits. We are rooted. And as people who are rooted, we can be built up.

Reflection & Journal:

- Why do you think “walk” is so often used to refer to the entirety of our lives in Scripture?

- How does the believer practically walk by faith each day?

- What can we do if we struggle to walk by faith? What are some steps to help that?
